A weekend at the train show.

June 17th, 2008

As I mentioned in the previous post, Angie and I went up to Ontario to the The Big Train Show. This was a two day event. We drove up to the hotel on friday and unpacked the bridge. We went over to the show on saturday morning and took a clinic on split jaw products. We learned about their new product line.

After the clinic we went back to the hotel (across the street) and ate breakfast. Yes the class was at 7:30 in the morning. After breakfast we loaded the bridge back up in the truck and took it across the street. We unloaded it and entered it into the scratch built contest.

After dropping off the bridge we drove back to the hotel and parked the truck and walked back to the show. The vendor show was just opening and we walked around the show. You can see some of the exhibit pictures in our gallery.

We bought a number of miniature people and animals for our garden railway. As we walked around the show, we noticed some new vendors and some of the old regular ones. We ended up purchasing a lot of items this year. The list of items are here:

Wireless railcam: www.railcam.net
Rail Clamps and reversing unit: http://www.railclamp.com
Airbrush: http://web2.airmail.net/toolman/

We also purchased some shirts and other small items. On Sunday we went to the Pomona Faiplex to visit their outdoor railroad. The pictures are in the gallery. When we got back to the show, we attended the airbrush weathering clinic. We watched the instructor take a beautiful new engine and make it look like it had been in the outdoors for 20 years. It was quite interesting to watch the transformation.

After the clinic we walked back around the show to buy all the items I put on my list from the day before. I am glad I waited because I got the railcam for $70 less because it was his last one and would not have to ship it out.

We picked up the Bridge from the scratch built contest. The bridge took 2nd place, not to shabby when you compare what it ran against.

We loaded the bridge back up on the truck and headed home. No damage was incurred at all on the bridge.

The Big Train Show

June 6th, 2008

Angie and I arrived in Ontario, California tonight for The Big Train Show. We will be attending some clinics and have entered our bridge into the scratch building contest.

The bridge was packed in it’s travel box (over 6′ long) and strapped down in the back of the truck. It survived the trip and did not budge an inch in the back of the truck.

More details about the show this weekend.

June 2nd, 2008

This weekend was a nice one, but the stars aligned to conspire against me in the back yard. I did get a bunch done. I got up early and headed to lowes to pick up some more sprinkler connectors and amended topsoil.

I am glad I decided to purchase the soil in bags because I paid less money for all the soil than the delivery charge to have it delivered. I finished filling up the herb garden area with the soil and ran drip irrigation to the area. I then planted all of my seeds. The plants that I decided to grow are: Rosemary, Basil, Chives, and Oregano. We will see how well I did in about 10 days as the seeds germinate.

I hooked up the last two valves to my automation system. I am now out of ports, so when I hook up the grass, I am going to need to re-route the front yard to it’s own system so that I can free up two of the back ports. I wanted to finish hooking up the grass and trees, but I discovered that while I bought all the right parts for my risers I was now out of 90 degree elbows. I can’t seem to have all the parts I need when I need them sigh.

Sunday I decided it would be a nice day to roast a chicken so I cleaned up the grill and skewered a chicken. Nothing tastes as good as fresh roasted chicken. I put some left over mulbec wine in the drip pan. This made the entire area smell oh so yummy!!! I was salivating all day.

I laid out all the track for phase one and was only short one turn-out. Easy enough to remedy with ebay. I then broke out the rail clamps to start installing them. I did the first 10 clamps with no problems. The next set of clamps which look exactly the same, but are not didn’t fit. After careful inspection I found they are not the same. They may rail clamps and rail joiner clamps. The joiner clamps are slightly larger to go over the rail joiners. These are not the ones I need, as I have removed all the joiners from my rails. I have email the company I bought the clamps from to see about getting them exchanged. I have 150 of them big sigh. It just wasn’t my day for getting a lot done.

Next weekend we are going to The Big Train Show in Ontario. Hopefully, I will pick up some good additions for the railroad and exchange the rail clamps. The manufacture of the clamps will be at the show.

On a side note, I have been having problems trying to get my rail program to line up my track. 6 feet of track is off and I can’t figure out why. I emailed tech support. I am assuming when I get my track clamped it will line up and I will see where the extra play is.

How about a 1st chance offer?

June 1st, 2008

Since I have been buying things on Ebay lately and noticed something called second chance offers. It appears that the seller contacts you and said, “Hey you have a second chance offer, and it’s for your max-bid amount.”

I strongly discourage buying from these sellers if your offered one of these. There is nothing to prevent them from bidding up the item with another account and then turning around and selling it back to you at your highest price. I have received two of these offers in the last 48 hours and it seem suspicious that I am out bid a day earlier, then I am offered the second chance offer within minutes of the auction ending.

Come out and see the steam train

May 30th, 2008

The last steam engine to pull cars in San Diego has been restored and is running on June 1st. Come out and take a look. Beware of the R&R marathon that day though.
