About time I made a decision.

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Ok, those that know me, know that I take forever to make technology purchasing decisions. In my job, I have no problem saying, “This is what we need to buy” and just do it. In my personal life I agonize over buying everything. I hate make decisions on technology because it changes so quickly and I feel like if I just wait I can get a better deal or better tech.

I have been waiting about two years to decide on getting an SLR digital camera. I have watched my friends buy and sell them over the last few years but still wanted to wait.

Last night I decided to finally jump into the pool and purchased the Canon Xsi

Xsi

It should take about a week to arrive, which is good since I will be on business travel until next Saturday. I look forward to it arriving when I get back.

Thanks to Trevor for this little piece of information on how to manually run a time machine backup from the command line: /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd.bundle/Contents/Resources/backupd-helper

Simple to put into cron when needed.

Think outside the box.

I decided to install VirtualBox this week. This is Sun’s freeware software that will allow you to run virtualized software like windows or pretty much any OS. Some of the commercial programs like VMware and Parrallels.

I was getting tired of the memory leak issues with Fusion so I decided to try this program. First off, the install was a piece of cake. It takes up a lot less disk space.

I didn’t have the patience to figure out how to convert my VMware images over, so I just decided to re-install XP from scratch. The install went supper fast. I installed from a network ISO and it took 1/2 the time of Fusion. The software boots really fast and so does the guest os. I can be up and running in almost a quarter of the time that it takes fusion to load.

I ran into a DNS bridging issue, but was able to fix it after a day of troubleshooting.

So far I am very impressed with this product. I will give an update as I use it more

the right tool doesn’t always work…

OK, so some of you may have seen I started using twitter tools. The sidebar feature works really well, but the nightly blog postings don’t seem to capture all the data from teh previous day. I decided to disable this feature and just use the side bar.
