Beware the Ides of March

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

I have been extremely lucky due to diligence and common sense when purchasing on the Internet. Today, I was going through my old receipts and discovered an order I had placed on March 14th 2009 that never arrived. I purchase a lot of items and it’s hard to keep track of what I bought and what has arrived. Having a checklist of things ordered really helps.

The company in question is called lidomounts.com and they appear to be a legitimate site that sells mounts for all sorts of vehicles. I had purchased a mount for a garmin nuvi for a motorcycle. Well it turns out this company is fraudulent. There appears to be a lot of postings about them, unfortunately it was all posted AFTER I made my purchase.

I looked online with my credit card company to dispute the charge. I was unable to find the charge on my statement so I called. There was no record of the charge. I got lucky… Apparently, their merchant account cut them off and my charge never went through.

I have tried to contact them to give them the benefit of the doubt, but nobody responded to voice mails or emails sent. The only real information I found was through the domain registration, but nobody at those numbers returns calls.

pet-peeve about web layout

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

I was watching a commercial on TV today that told me to go to their web site to get more information on a specific subject. I went to the site and spent about 5 minutes searching their site for the information I wanted. I scoured the main page, used their search box and even read their entire site map and still could not find the page.

If you’re going to advertise (go here and then do this) it’s really important to allow your customers to get to your data by a minimum of two clicks or a simple text search. If you can’t get to the information you want quickly, you are going to loose your audience to clicking off. Two real-world examples of this are HP.com’s web site. Anyone that know this site knows what I mean. Another example is a phone tree. Many companies have eliminated the “0′ option to get an operator and get out of phone tree hell. Generally, if I encounter a vendor I can’t hit 0 and get out of the tree I won’t bother buying from them.

Please think about your customers when developing a site. Are you making it easy for them to get the information or are you trying to dazzle them with your web design skills?

Please leave town and take the bugs you rode in on with you!

Well I have been away from blogging for a while. After all the hard work I put in the last few months, I decided to take a day off of work and go to Disneyland. I don’t know if it was that my body was run down or all the pools of festering germs from all the kids at the park (maybe both), but I got sick.

I have not been sick in over three years, and not for more than three days in a row. This sickness hit me hard. I am still recovering after two weeks. Most of the symptoms are gone except for coughing every so often. I hope that by this weekend I will be fully recovered.

The internet just got friendlier

Some of you may have heard that yesterday one of the “Alleged my ass” biggest spammers on the internet have been shutdown. You can read about it here: http://tinyurl.com/6qyw4e

From my point of view, I have statistics from the last 30 days of spam caught by spamassasin. and I have been averaging about 38-40 messages a day. In the last 24 hours I have only received 8-10 messages.

I think they finally did something constructive to help everyone on the Internet!

my spam actually has dropped 2/3’s on average I get 38-40 a day that end up in my

Doing my 40 mile bike ride today, I ran into the following drivers who may be elligible for the darwin awards real soon.

1) Driver with food in one hand and a cell phone in the other (25 mph). She didn’t see any of the cyclests around her and almost wipe out one of them.

2) Driver who thinks a Yield sign means I am bigger than you so I won’t stop. I pointed to the yeild sign and explained he needed to yeid. I got the double bird and an explitive. I hope he exits the gene pool real soon.

3) Group riders that think they can ride 5 abreast on a two way bike path. Where the F*CK do you think I am going to go you selfish idiot?
