Possible things to come

Sunday, August 30th, 2020

For the last two months, I have been working way to many hours on a new project for work. I am finally coming to the end and look forward to being done with it. The majority of my time spent in the last few weeks was setting up a service that was free because the commercial solution I would rather have was not in the budget. I have learned the following:

1) DO not trust vendors. Even when they say their products work, they have bugs. Insist they reproduce it in their labs, rather than just say “it’s your environment”. It took me 7 days and insisting to get an expert in my operating system until we identified it was a bug in their software. I found a work around and will wait for a patch.

2) When setting complex passwords, never assume the vendors can deal with it.

a) using a * in a password prevented the software from properly installing.

b) using < or > in a password is not a good idea if the software does not properly escape the character before passing it to the shell. This took over a month to debug and we ONLY stumbled on the issue when I double checked the password and was luck, WTAF! <facepalm> moment.

3) There is a sever lack of useful HOWTO documentation for what I was trying to do. Lots of documentation, but not enough to help you jumpstart your knowledge.

Item 3 has re-inspired me to continue to do my training documentation and videos. I am looking to create a new YouTube channel in conjunction with my personal blog: https://www.yourservice.com/blog I have quite a ton of material. I am trying to figure out if I should do 30-60 minutes videos or break them down into 10-15 minutes shorts. Should I release topics all at once, or one piece at a time? Does anyone out there have experience with this? I am also wondering if you can actually make any money doing this? My goal is to produce videos that could actually be used in or supplement classroom learning.

Thoughts?

Geocaching number 100

Saturday, June 8th, 2019

If anyone was paying attention, I had a burst of geocaching activity this month. I went over 100 finds. The 100 cache was aptly found on a railroad track in Dawson City in the Yukon Territory.

This day in history

Tuesday, October 25th, 2016

Today is Oct 25th and everyone is posting memes about Henry V and the St. Crispin’s day battle:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Agincourt

I was drawn to look up other events in history and discovered that today is also the day Battle of Balaclava took pace. This is known for the charge of the light brigade. Also, made famous by the poem written by Lord Alfred Tennyson.

On the Wikipedia page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Charge_of_the_Light_Brigade_(poem)

there appears to be a recording of Lord Tennyson reciting his poem from 1890 recorded on an Edison wax cylinder. Listening to the recording, I am not sure if there is such a lack of emotion in the recording because of the technology or that Tennyson, did have much of an emoting personality. I have heard this poem read by others and have been brought to tears by the reciter. Listing to Tennyson left me with no emotion. Check it out and tell me what you think. The link to the audio (albeit poor quality) is halfway down the page to the right.

BBQ Review – Cali Comfort

Saturday, February 14th, 2015

Name: Cali Comfort
Address: 8910 Troy Street, Spring Valley, CA 91977
http://www.calicomfortsd.com//

Date of Visit: January 31st, 2015 (actually our second visit)

BBQ Style: Texas Style

Food Ordered: (we had a coupon the first time, so we got their combo plates)

  • Beef Brisket
  • Pulled Pork
  • Pork Ribs
  • Tri-Tip
  • Tater Tots (instead of the fries)
  • Baked Beans
  • Mac and Cheese
  • Cole Slaw
  • Corn Bread
  • Peach Cobbler

Food Review:

  • Beef Brisket – The Brisket was perfectly cooked and had great flavor. The first time I ordered it it came as chopped beef instead of strips, but the second visit it was perfectly sliced strips.
  • Pulled Pork – The pulled pork was fantastic, one of the best I have ever had and I dare say it was better than anything I have ever produced. The texture was perfect and no fat at all. The meat was rich with flavor and didn’t need any sauce.
  • Pork Ribs – I was ultimately amazed with the ribs. No silver skin and cooked perfectly with fantastic flavor. These are the best pork ribs I have ever had in a restaurant.
  • Tri-Tip – The Tri-Tip had tons of flavor but was a little tough. I can’t fault this because it’s very hard to keep this cut of meat from getting tough. The flavor was amazing though.
  • Tater Tots – The tater tots were great and I recommend them as a slightly different side.
  • Baked Beans – The baked beans had good flavor and pulled pork in them was a pleasant surprise.
  • Mac and Cheese – The mac and cheese was good, but nothing special.
  • Cole Slaw – The cole slaw was just ok.
  • Corn Bread – The corn bread was nice and spicy with jalapeños, but may be too spicy for some.
  • Peach Cobbler – The cobbler was good, but your basic run of the meal dessert.

General Review – The restaurant is in an area of town that is a little off-putting. Don’t let this scare you away. Parking is pretty good with spaces behind and across the street. There is an assisted living home behind the restaurant that is available for parking. The place has a sports bar attached to the restaurant but it can be quite noisy. So if you are looking for a quiet spot, request to be seated away from the bar. The waiter recommended the rib tips as his favorite, but we didn’t try those as there was too many other items we wanted to have instead. The Iced Tea was really good, normally it’s too brisk or too sweet, this was brewed perfectly. The restaurant has large booths that can hold 8-10 people and the place has a nice cozy cottage feel.

Their sauce comes in mild and spicy. The spicy sauce has a good kick, but you have no need for any sauce on the meats as they all have excellent flavor. It is not very often that a BBQ restaurant can do good meats as most places try to mass produce their product like a certain place on Sports Arena and the quality suffers. But, it’s extremely rare when every meat that comes out is excellent and flavorful, not overcooked and dried out.

I was so impressed with the quality of their food, I wanted to wait until a second visit to make sure their quality was repeated and not just a first-time fluke. This is a place I will highly recommend and will be visiting for a long time.

Darkavich’s BBQ rating: I give it a 9 out of 10. (only because slightly tough Tri-Tip)

What happened to my pants?

Monday, June 30th, 2014

Over this last weekend I have come to the realization that I have to finally give in and give up trying to wear cloths that are too big for me. Those of you who know me, know I am a cheap bastard when it comes to spending money on myself. I always think,  “Hey, those are still in great shape, I should just tighten up the belt”, but unfortunately, you can only go so far before you look like you are wearing a parachute. I am now the smallest I have been since I got sick back in the 90s and then started gaining weight. I still have a way to go, but need to figure out what to do. 😉
