Sweet Tooth

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Well for the last few weeks I have been nursing a temperature sensitive tooth. Today, I finally made it to the dentist and had it taken care of. Of course, it needed a root canal. I have had this done before in the past and it was quite painful and an experience I don’t recommend to my enemies.(not that I have any).

Technology has come quite a long way since my last one. I was in and out of the office in about an hour while prior ones had taken three hours or longer. The only real pain I had was the first shot of Novocain.

On the way home I had to stop at the grocery store and discovered to my surprise that they have started carrying “Toffifay” again! This brings me WAY back to the ’80s. They now ship in a QTY 15 package, I dare you to just eat one. Now I am just waiting for the stores to start carrying YooHoo’s again with the cork bottle caps.

There are changes on the horizon for me. Check back for some updates.

Well, it’s that time of the year. The 2007 Darwin awards have been released. Unfortunately, slashdot also posted the awards, so the site is down due to all the excessive traffic.

Because it’s there.

A major historical figure has passed away this week. Sir Edmond Hilary was one of the great 20th century explorers. Hilary was a man who was faced with challenges through out his entire life.

When he was young, he was told that he was too small so he was never included in team sports. Instead, he used his disadvantage as an opportunity to read and dream of becoming an adventurer.

He learned about the sport of climbing where size doesn’t matter. He started climbing at the age of 16 and quickly found that he was stronger and had greater endurance than any of his companions.

in 1952, Hillary tried to ascend Everest with a British expedition that ended in failure. He was told it could never be done and to give up. Most people would give up and move on to other challenges. But in just one more year he tried again and succeeded.

What everyone should learn from this is that no matter what people say, you should never give up. When someone tells you that you can’t do it, don’t get mad. Use that as an opportunity to prove them wrong and do it.

Remember the only one that can hold you back is yourself. If you see a mountain that needs to be climbed, go do it. If people ask you why your doing what your doing, tell them “Because it’s there.”

Bad marketing…

Ok apple, what’s up with this?

I have a .MAC account. I use it specifically so I can sync my computers and use it once in a while to publish calendars and photos.

My account expired in december and I wanted to renew it. If I renew it online Apple wants to charge me $129 for a year. Instead I can purchase another ,MAC box for $79 on amazon and wait the 2 days for it to ship and I then can register for another year.

This is just silly. Why does apple charge FULL retail for renewal? Until, there is a discount on renewing, I will continue to just buy full retail releases (at a discount).

A day in the life…

So what did I do on my birthday? Well it sure was not boring πŸ˜‰

I got up around 9am. After the morning rituals we headed out to face the day.

* Stopped at the bank to make a deposit.
* Went to the Post Office (nothing exciting)
* Stopped in at AAA to pay my car and boat registration. Picked up a ton of cruise brochures for Panama.
* Popped into Circuit City to pick up memory sticks for Angie’s new Camera and GPS.

* VERY hungry, so we went to downtown La Jolla to have breakfast/lunch at The Cottage. No wait for an inside table, my lucky day, as some people where still waiting for outside tables when we left 25 minutes later. I had my usual favorite Eggs Benedict.

* Drove down to PB and stopped in at Great-News. I wanted to look at some dutch ovens and pick up a garlic press. No luck with either. Hope my luck is not changing for the day.

* Swung by Fashion Valley Mall to stop into the Sony Style store. They didn’t have the pink case I wanted to get for Angie’s camera. I did pick up a docking station for our cameras. I thought they undercharged me when I left the store, but I see they just dropped the price $30 today. Boy my luck is good today! And I convinced them to also give me a 15% discount because we just bought the camera.

* Wandered over to the Verizon store to see about getting a new phone. I didn’t see anything I liked πŸ™
* Looked at the iPhone in the Apple Store. I was all ready to buy, but had some questions. I wanted to know if the phone would work with my ipod auto adaptor that has a line out jack. The completely unhelpful sales weenie basically told me to google for my answer. I looked at him and smiled, saying “I don’t think thats an appropriate answer to tell a customer.” After an exchange of what I had, he still said he had no idea…. I asked him who would know and he said nobody. I took a deep sigh and walked out. “I really should have asked for the store manager and made a stink, but I was not in the mood.” If I buy the unit, I will mention it to the store manager at that time. One a side note, I found the answer on their own web site.

Can I use iPod accessories with my new iPhone?
iPhone has the same 30-pin dock connector as the iPod, so many properly designed accessories can be used with both iPhone and iPod. However, iPhone may cause audio interference with some iPod accessories. Products that are engineered and certified to be compatible with the iPhone will carry the β€œWorks with iPhone” logo on their packaging. See Accessories for more information.

* Left the Mall and drove down to the Convention Center for the 2008 Auto show. We spent four hours there! wow, our legs and muscles are tired. The highlights of the show for us where:

    * Hummer: Not enough head room for me WOW!
    * BMW: Love the 135i is a nice car.
    * Saab: I can no longer fit in the 9-3πŸ™
    * Chevy: I am in love with the new corvette. If your looking for a birthday present for me πŸ˜‰ I would love the Z06.
    * VW: The new beetle is a really neat car and very comfortable and lots of leg room.
    * Saturn: …no longer has dent resistant doors. They claim everyone hated the colors. Oh well, no saturn for us in the future. That was the only reason to get them.
    * Toyota: New camry is the same as the old camry. No changes. The Prius, is almost the same price, but fully loaded. Looked at the Highlander Hybrid, but they didn’t have the limited in a hybrid, so I may go to the dealer to check them out. We did learn that they are building a mini-truck hybrid called the A-BAT. There was also talk about a plugin version of the Prius. There is already a company in San Diego doing this as an after market option.

This was a fun car show, but boy do I feel like I walked all over the place today. Can’t wait until next week for the Boat Show

* Starving again, so we went to Lorna’s in University City. This is an awesome place and the food is top notch and the portions require you to take home leftovers!

* Stopped in to UTC to see if the apple store would be open, but they closed early on Saturday πŸ™

Drove home…. What a day πŸ˜‰

Once last note: Sitting here, I was flipping through the Hi-Def channels and stumbled across MTV-HD. Looks like MTV is back to playing REAL music and not reality shows. I will have to keep my eye on this channel. Now if I can only get TWC to offer UHD on cable card then I can get Doctor Who and Torchwood in Hi-Def.
