After the show we went across the street to the Alamo. We walked around and toured the Alamo. They showed a movie from the Discovery Channel about the Alamo. A word of warning, they have no announcement for when the movie starts. It runs every 20 minutes so if you miss it the first time (like we did), you do not have long to wait. You can tour their history museum while you are waiting. There is a lot to read and see here.
Social Comment: It is interesting about the history
we learn in school. Before I had seen a Disney Channel show about
the adventures of Davey Crocket, I had no idea he died at the
Alamo. I remember seeing the show and thinking, "no way".
They never told us that in school. We only hear about him in all
the frontiersman stories. I also didn't know he was a 3 time congressman.
So much for our well spent tax dollars on our public civics classes.![]()
After the Alamo, we stopped for drinks at the Hyatt hotel. We had two White Russians and had an appetizer. It was nice to just sit and relax with nobody else around.
We then decided to take a tour of the city. We took a trolley to see the city. The tour we took was the Texas Trolley. We drove by the Alamo, the Riverwalk, two of the San Antonio missions (San Jose, and San Capistrano), the Tower of Americas, and King William Street. The driver was very good. He gave us a ton of info regarding the city. The really funny thing was the driver was coming to California in a week. We gave him-more info about California than he did to us about San Antonio.
After we got back we had dinner at the Tower of Americas. On the way to the restaurant we walked through the water park that is in the park. They have water that sprays the ground from archways. It was so hot; Angie wanted to walk through it. She was dry in minutes though, so we didn't have to worry about her being drenched when we went to dinner.
The restaurant is at the top of the tower and revolves. It takes 45 minutes to make one revolution. Angie ordered the shrimp (wow!), what is going on here? (For those of you that do not know, Angie hates seafood). I had the prime rib. The dessert was very good. We had cheesecake and a brownie with ice cream. We stayed for a little more than two revolutions. After dinner we went up stairs to take video and pictures from the observation deck. It was very cold and windy up there. We headed back down and walked back to the hotel.
When we got back, we decided to take a riverboat cruise. The driver told jokes like the Disneyland jungle cruise drivers. There were lots of hisses. He told a story about the Hilton. He claimed the rooms were pre-furnished before they were assembled. The hotel is in the Guiness Book of World Records as the quickest built hotel in the world.
The Riverwalk is built around the natural flow of the river
that makes a U-shaped bend. For flooding purposes, they trenched
across the top of the U. This allowed the Riverwalk to have floodgates
installed at the top of each side of the U. When the main San
Antonio River water level rises the Riverwalk can be shut off
from flooding. A pretty ingenious solution if I do say so. ![]()
We came back to the room to get some rest from our first day out of the city. It was a long day and we are both tired.
BTW: The woman's 200-meter butterfly record was broken
today. It was the longest standing swimming record. For those
of us that follow professional swimming, we care.
