Cruise flyers: page1 page2 page3 page4

The following is the flyer the cruise line gave us about the city of Juneau: page1 page2 page3 page4

We got up bright and earlier (again with the early morning awakening). Today we took a helicopter to the Mendenhall glacier. We ate breakfast and rushed off the ship just in time for the bus. On the way to the heliport, we listened to a mini city tour. Along the way, we saw more eagles.

When we arrived at the heliport they showed us a video briefing and had us put on special shoes. The funny thing is that the shoes we already had on had better traction. The helicopters arrived and took us to the glacier. Steve got some great video of the flight in. The flight was very crowded and we sort of felt like cattle on the way to our glacier.

We arrived on the glacier. Our landing spot was just below a large cliff of ice. We saw a stream and a waterfall in the middle of the glacier. It was amazing to see this. We learned that the top of the glacier mimics the bedrock below. So if there is a cliff on the bottom there is a cliff on the top.

We walked around the glacier for about 30 minutes. Some people drank from the glacial stream. Those crazy tourists, LOL. The helicopters returned and we boarded to go back to the heliport.

The experience was great and never being in a helicopter before, I would not have missed this trip. Just be aware that this particular trip felt very business like. Get them there, Get them back. The pilot didn't even speak, he just played an audio tape. This was quite different than the flight to Ft. Yukon. I didn't feel like the flight crew made us feel special like they did on the airplane. But it was still a wonderful flight none-the-less.

We returned to the ship and we had a few hours before our next tour. We walked by the Red Dog Saloon. Neither Angie nor I knew why this saloon was famous. We will have to do some research later. We saw a 6-foot Geod! It was very pretty.

We then wandered around the town. We stopped in a lot of shops. We bought a cool blanket we plan to turn into a tapasty. Steve got a mask for the guest room. We saw a cool looking star sapphire in a man's platinum ring. It was not what Steve was looking for but we have some ideas for Marco. :-)

We headed back to the ship to drop off our stash. Just in time for our next tour.

We boarded the bus for a 30-minute drive to the boat tour. We boarded a boat with two decks. It was drizzling on the way to the boat, but it stopped when we headed out on the water. The ship gives you a map and binoculars to use. This was very cool.

We headed out on the water. The first stop was near a buoy. There was an eagle sitting on the top. We hung out for a little while so people could observe the eagle. Schooling fish jumping whale eating switched tables for dinner. Much better service
